Conflict Resolution and Difficult Conversations Training for Managers

Practical, rehearsed skills that help your managers calm tense moments, understand what motivates people to change, and resolve problems before they reach HR.

For mid-level and front-line managers · One 4-hour workshop · In person or online · Led by Gregg Ward

When Managers Avoid Conflict, or Make It Worse

Most managers handle conflict one of two ways. They avoid the conversation and hope the problem fades, or they push too hard and put people on the defensive. Either way, the issue grows. Good employees disengage, teams split into camps, and a fixable problem lands on HR’s desk.

The cost adds up. U.S. workers spend an average of two hours a week dealing with conflict, about $3,200 per employee per year in lost productivity. (Workplace Peace Institute, 2024)

It’s rarely a lack of goodwill. Most managers were never shown how to handle a tense conversation, so they fall back on instinct, and instinct under stress usually means fight, flight, or freeze.

Practice, Not Theory

Managers practice every skill in triads and with the facilitator, taking turns as the manager, the employee, and the observer. By the end, they’ve already had the difficult conversation once, in a safe setting.
