450 executives gathered at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit this year to discuss career secrets, the industries that they work in, and advice for women in business. The Washington Post has condensed three days of career and leadership suggestions from these women into the five best pieces of advice. These three are our favorites.
- Be a thermostat. This is a great analogy for what you’ll need to do as a leader. You can turn up the temperature to energize and focus people, or turn it down when necessary. The idea is that you’ll have to use different tactics and styles depending on what the situation calls for.
- Don’t forget the spouses. Facebook’s CEO of global marketing solutions Carolyn Everson found a way to recognize the spouses of her employees who were putting in long hours in the office. She bought them all gifts for the holidays and wrote them letters. A little bit of thoughtfulness goes a long way.
- Get used to being uncomfortable. Career growth will make you uncomfortable, but taking risks is the way to grow and learn.
